New PC Games Out Now — August 2026, and What Each One Actually Needs

August was supposed to be the quiet month before September. It isn't behaving like one. Game Freak's first big non-Pokémon swing arrived last week to strong reviews and a rough PC launch, a 4v4 Marvel fighter lands tomorrow, and the month's real pile-up is still ahead on the 27th.

Here's what's actually out, what's imminent, and — the part most release calendars skip — what each one wants from your hardware.

Beast of Reincarnation — Out Now (August 4)

Game Freak's post-apocalyptic action RPG follows Emma, a katana-wielding wanderer, and her dog through a ruined Japan. It's a one-person, one-dog structure built around fast melee, companion abilities and cinematic boss fights — and it's the studio's most serious attempt at something outside Pokémon.

The reviews are good. It sits at 76 on OpenCritic across 65 critics with a "Strong" rating, 73 on Metacritic from 52 reviews, and Famitsu gave it 35/40. The recurring line in the roundups is that the combat and the central duo land, while the story and the technical state don't.

The PC launch is the problem. It runs on Unreal Engine 5.4.4, and players are reporting traversal stutter, micro-stutters and crashes — frame drops in dense forest areas, during particle-heavy fights and at world transitions, on hardware well above the recommended tier.

Minimum Recommended
Target 1080p, Low, ~40 FPS 1080p, 60 FPS
OS Windows 10/11 64-bit Windows 10/11 64-bit
CPU Core i5-8400 / Ryzen 5 3600 Core i7-12700K / Ryzen 7 5800X
RAM 16GB 16GB
GPU GTX 1070 8GB / RX 580 8GB RTX 3060 12GB / RX 6700 XT 12GB
Storage SSD required, 45GB SSD, 45GB
Upscaling DLSS / FSR Performance assumed DLSS / FSR 3 assumed

Read that bottom row twice. Both tiers assume upscaling is on — the recommended spec needs DLSS or FSR just to hold 1080p60, and the minimum spec is quoting 40 FPS at Performance mode. That is a demanding game describing itself accurately, which is more than most manage, but go in with the right expectations. Our DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS guide covers which one to pick on your card.

If you've bought it and it's hitching: install it on an NVMe SSD rather than a hard drive, cap the frame rate at 60 instead of unlocking it, and drop shadow quality first — that one setting has been worth close to 20 FPS for players in heavy forest areas. Our why games stutter guide explains what's actually happening and the full fix order.

Check your build against it with Can I Run It before you buy.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls — August 6

Arc System Works' 4v4 tag fighter launches tomorrow on Steam, Epic and PS5, with 20 characters at launch, a single-player campaign and local and online play. Some regions — New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Korea — get it on August 7 local time. The open beta ran July 24–26 and has closed, so tomorrow is the real thing.

Minimum Recommended
OS Windows 11 Windows 11
CPU Core i5-8400 / Ryzen 5 1600X Core i7-8700 / Ryzen 5 3600X
RAM 16GB 16GB
GPU RTX 2060 6GB / RX 6600 XT 8GB RTX 3070 8GB / RX 7600 XT 16GB

Two things stand out. Windows 11 is listed on both tiers, with no Windows 10 entry — worth knowing before you pre-load. And the requirements are modest by 2026 standards, which is normal and deliberate for the genre: fighting games are built to run everywhere, because a fighting game with a small player base is a dead fighting game.

The metric that matters here isn't average FPS, it's consistency. A fighter that averages 90 FPS with periodic hitches is worse to play than one locked at a rock-solid 60, because inputs in this genre are judged in single frames. Cap it, make sure it holds, and read how to reduce input lag if you're playing online seriously.

Gears of War: E-Day Beta — August 6

Also tomorrow: the early access beta for Gears of War: E-Day, open to pre-order customers and PC Game Pass subscribers, ahead of the October 6 launch. A wider open beta follows.

This is the single best free diagnostic available this month. It's a UE5.8 game with Lumen, MegaLights and Nanite, and no official system requirements have been published yet — so playing the beta tells you more about whether your PC is ready than any spec sheet will. We covered the full E-Day PC feature list, including its attempt to eliminate shader compilation stutter, which is worth watching closely given how this month's other big release has gone.

Hell Let Loose: Vietnam — August 13

The most-wishlisted August release on Steam. Delayed from June 18 following playtests and player feedback, it now lands on August 13.

Steam's official requirements:

Minimum Recommended
Target 1080p / 60 FPS 1440p / 60 FPS
OS Windows 10 64-bit Windows 11 64-bit
CPU Core i5-11600K / Ryzen 5 5600X Core i5-12600K / Ryzen 5 7600X
GPU RTX 2060 / RX 5700 RTX 3070 / RX 6700 XT
Storage 50GB 50GB
Network Broadband required Broadband required

Note the CPU floor: an i5-11600K or Ryzen 5 5600X minimum is high, and that's the genre showing. Large-scale multiplayer with a lot of simultaneous players is CPU-bound in a way single-player games usually aren't, so a strong GPU with an older processor will underperform here. If you're unsure which side of your system is the limit, the bottleneck calculator will tell you.

You'll also see third-party sites quoting requirements that don't match this table. Trust the Steam page — the figures above are from it directly.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 — August 25

Cold Iron Studios' sequel arrives on Steam and Epic on August 25, published by Daybreak. The squad size goes from three to four, with revised classes and a new customizable Specialist that mixes abilities from the others. $49.99 standard, $69.99 premium.

Full PC requirements haven't been published at the time of writing. When they are, you'll be able to check them against your exact hardware on Can I Run It.

The August 27 Pile-Up

Three notable releases land on the same day at the end of the month:

  • Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacyour preview
  • Star Wars Zero Company — XCOM-style tactics from Bit Reactor, with permadeath — our preview
  • Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 — MGS4 and Peace Walker in HD

We covered all three in the August release calendar. If you're only buying one game this month, that's the day to keep money aside for.

Before You Buy Anything This Month

Three habits that save money and frustration, and they've never been more relevant than in a month where a well-reviewed game shipped with launch-day stutter:

  1. Check requirements against your actual hardware, not your memory of it. Can I Run It does this against your exact CPU, GPU and RAM. If you're not sure what's in your machine, how to check your PC specs walks through it in two minutes.
  2. Wait 48 hours on day-one purchases. Beast of Reincarnation is a good game with a rough PC launch — the reviews and the player reports are telling different stories, and both are true. Refund windows are short; patches usually aren't fast.
  3. 16GB of RAM and an SSD are now baseline, not nice-to-have. Every requirements table above lists both. Beast of Reincarnation lists an SSD as a hard requirement, not a suggestion. See how much RAM you actually need and how much SSD storage for gaming.
