Gears of War: E-Day — Beta Starts August 6, and the PC Feature List Is Stacked
Gears of War: E-Day — The Coalition's prequel taking the series back to Emergence Day itself — lands on October 6, 2026, and PC players get hands-on far sooner than that. An early access beta opens August 6 for anyone who's pre-ordered or subscribes to PC Game Pass, with a wider open beta to follow.
The PC feature list published alongside the date is one of the more complete ones we've seen this year. It's not just a DLSS checkbox — there's a fix for the single most common complaint about Unreal Engine 5 games buried in it. Here's the full picture, and an honest read on what it's likely to cost your hardware.
Beta Access: Two Waves

The Game Pass inclusion is the notable part — you don't need to put money down on a pre-order to get in on day one of the beta, just an active PC Game Pass subscription. On the PC side the beta ships with DLSS Super Resolution and NVIDIA Reflex already in, so it's a reasonable proxy for launch performance even if the full feature set isn't there yet.
Betas are also the best possible time to find out your PC has a problem, six weeks before it matters. Use it.
The Full PC Feature List
DLSS 4.5 with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation. The headline RTX feature. Super Resolution handles the upscaling, and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation multiplies frame rate on top of it. If frame generation is new to you, the short version is that it inserts generated frames between rendered ones — excellent for smoothness on a high-refresh display, less useful if your base frame rate is already low, since it doesn't reduce input latency. NVIDIA Reflex for latency reduction, which matters more than usual in a series built on close-quarters shotgun duels.
AMD FSR and Intel XeSS natively supported. Full tri-vendor upscaling, not an NVIDIA-only showcase. Radeon and Arc owners aren't second-class here.
Advanced Shader Delivery — no shader compilation stutter. This deserves more attention than it's getting. Shader comp stutter is the signature failure of Unreal Engine 5 games on PC: the hitching that ruins the first hour of play while your CPU compiles shaders on the fly. The Coalition is shipping precompiled shader delivery to eliminate it. If it works as described, it's arguably the most valuable item on this entire list.
Ultrawide done properly. Native rendering at 21:9 and 32:9 with HUD elements repositioned so they stay readable at extreme aspect ratios — rather than the usual approach of stretching a 16:9 interface and hoping nobody notices.
Full PC options suite: rebindable keyboard and mouse controls, granular graphics sliders for texture quality and post-processing, and both controller and mouse-and-keyboard input supported across all modes.
The Engine: Where the Frames Will Go
E-Day runs on Unreal Engine 5.8 via DirectX 12, and the specific technologies in use tell you a lot about what your GPU will be doing:
- Lumen — ray-traced global illumination. The expensive one. Lighting that bounces correctly costs real frames.
- MegaLights — ray-traced shadows from up to 100 light sources simultaneously. Historically, shadow-casting lights were rationed carefully because each one was expensive; MegaLights is UE5's answer to that, and E-Day is leaning on it hard.
- Nanite — The Coalition claims detail increases up to 100x compared to Gears 5. Treat that as a marketing figure about geometric density rather than a promise about what you'll perceive, but it does indicate where the asset budget went.
- Real-time destruction and volumetric effects, both of which have historically been CPU-and-GPU-hungry.
RTX cards get hardware acceleration for the Lumen and MegaLights ray tracing paths, which is where the DLSS 4.5 partnership earns its keep.
What Will It Actually Need?
No official system requirements have been published. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing. So are we — but here's an informed guess, clearly labelled as one.
A UE5.8 game shipping with hardware ray tracing, Lumen, MegaLights and Nanite is not a light game. Based on how comparable UE5 titles have landed:
- 1080p60, medium-ish settings will likely want something in the RTX 3060 / RX 6600 XT class as a realistic floor, with upscaling on.
- 1440p high probably lands around the RTX 4070 / RX 7800 XT mark with DLSS or FSR Quality doing real work.
- 4K with ray tracing turned up will be a genuine flagship ask — think RTX 4080 and above, leaning on frame generation.

Again: this is extrapolation from comparable engines, not published specification. When The Coalition posts official tiers we'll update, and you'll be able to check your exact build against them with Can I Run It.
The August 6 beta will tell you more than any of this speculation will. That's the point of running one.
Bottom Line
October 6 for launch, August 6 for the beta if you've pre-ordered or hold PC Game Pass. The feature list is one of the most complete PC packages of the year — tri-vendor upscaling, DLSS 4.5 with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, proper 21:9 and 32:9 support, full rebinding, and a real attempt at killing shader compilation stutter, which is the thing that has quietly ruined more UE5 launches than any other single issue.
The flip side is that Lumen plus MegaLights plus Nanite is a demanding combination, and no official requirements exist yet.
