Radeon RX 9050 Explained — $279, 8GB, and You Can't Buy It in the US
AMD has launched the Radeon RX 9050, an entry-level RDNA 4 card aimed squarely at 1080p, at a suggested $279. In a year where new consumer desktop GPUs have been almost nonexistent, it may end up being the only one AMD ships.
Two things complicate the story. It launched in Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America — with no announced date for North America or Europe. And there is a second, worse card wearing the same name, sold only inside prebuilt systems, with half the memory bus and half the VRAM.

One note on that TFLOPS figure, because it gets quoted without context: 10.6 TFLOPS is the dual-issue peak. RDNA can co-issue two FP32 operations per lane under the right conditions, and AMD's marketing number assumes it happens. The straightforward single-issue math on 1,024 shaders at 2.6 GHz is about 5.3 TFLOPS. Real games land somewhere between the two, usually much closer to the lower figure. The genuinely likeable spec here is 92W. That is a small, cool, quiet card that asks almost nothing of your power supply — the kind of part that drops into an old office prebuilt or a small-form-factor build without a PSU upgrade turning a $279 purchase into a $400 one. The 4GB Version Is the Real Story
AMD has confirmed a 4GB Radeon RX 9050. It is OEM-exclusive, sold only inside prebuilt systems, and will not be available as a standalone card.
It is not simply the 8GB card with less memory:

Halving the bus halves the bandwidth, and that compounds with the smaller capacity rather than merely accompanying it. A card that has to swap assets in and out more often also has less bandwidth to do the swapping.
4GB is not a viable amount of VRAM for new games in 2026. The consumer problem is the naming. A spec sheet in a retail listing says "AMD Radeon RX 9050." Two very different cards answer to that. If you're buying a prebuilt, make the seller state the VRAM in writing — and if the listing won't tell you, treat that as the answer. Availability: Not Here, Not Yet
The RX 9050 launched in Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America at $279. AMD has not announced North American or European availability.
That's an unusual choice for a mainstream part, and the most plausible read connects to the wider market: with GDDR6 costs up roughly threefold since late 2025 and both vendors raising prices in August, a $279 card with 8GB of memory has thin margins. Launching where it competes best, rather than everywhere at once, is a rational response to a supply-constrained year.
If it does reach North America later, don't assume $279 travels with it. Regional pricing, tariffs and a memory market that keeps moving all argue against that.
What US Buyers Should Do Instead
You can't buy this card right now, so the practical question is what fills the same slot: a genuinely cheap, low-power 1080p GPU.
- Look one tier up, used. A previous-generation card in the RX 6600 / RTX 3060 class typically beats a modern entry-level part and can be had for sensible money secondhand. Read the used GPU buying guide first — there are specific things worth checking before you pay.

The RX 9050 is a sensible little card: 16 CUs, 8GB on a 128-bit bus, 92W, $279, built for 1080p and for systems with modest power supplies.
