How it works

How does a website measure DNS speed?+

Browsers can't send raw port-53 DNS queries, so we time a DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) request to each resolver and take the median of several samples. That round-trip is dominated by the network path between you and the resolver — which is exactly what decides how snappy a DNS feels day to day.

Why is one DNS faster than another for me?+

It's mostly distance and routing. A resolver with a datacenter close to you (and a good path from your ISP) answers in a few milliseconds; a far or congested one takes longer. Because that depends on your location and ISP, the fastest DNS is different for everyone — that's why you test it yourself.

Will a faster DNS improve my gaming?+

It won't lower your in-game ping — once you're in a match, DNS is out of the loop. But a fast, reliable resolver speeds up connecting to servers, matchmaking, page loads and downloads, and avoids flaky ISP DNS. It's a safe, free upgrade.

How do I actually switch my DNS?+

On Windows: Settings → Network → your adapter → Edit DNS → Manual, and enter the IP (e.g. 1.1.1.1). On a router you set it once for every device on your network. On phones you can set Private DNS (Android) or a DoH profile (iOS). Always keep a note of your old values in case you want to switch back.

Are some resolvers missing a result?+

A few DNS providers block cross-origin browser requests, so we can't time them from this page even though they work fine as your system DNS. Their IPs are still listed so you can try them manually.

Results measure DNS-over-HTTPS round-trip time from your browser and vary with your connection, Wi-Fi and how each provider routes to you — run the test a few times for a stable picture. Also try the game-server ping test. GamerSpecs never uses or endorses “booster” software.
