GPU Prices Are Rising Again — AMD Joins Nvidia's August 2026 Hike

Three weeks ago we wrote about the RAM and SSD price crisis and called graphics cards "the one comparatively calm corner of this particular story" — while noting that GDDR memory sits on those boards too, so it could change.

It changed.

On July 31, 2026, AMD notified its add-in board partners that Radeon GPU and GDDR6 memory kit prices rise by at least 10% starting in August. That lands days after Nvidia's own increase — the third GPU-related price adjustment it has made this year. Both vendors are now moving in the same direction at the same time, which removes the last thing budget buyers had going for them: the ability to play one against the other.

Here's what actually happened, what it does and doesn't mean for the price you'll pay, and how to make a sane decision in a market like this.

What AMD Did

The July 31 notice covers both GPU dies and GDDR6 memory kits — the bundled parts AMD sells to partners like ASRock, Sapphire and PowerColor, who turn them into the cards you buy. The reported increase is at least 10%, described in supply-chain reporting as one installment of a planned 10–15% rise across the second half of 2026.

Worth stating plainly: this is supply-chain reporting, not a press release. AMD did not publish a price-increase announcement, and the specific numbers come from partner notifications rather than from AMD's newsroom. Treat the direction as solid and the exact percentage as approximate.

The timing looks deliberate. AMD waited for Nvidia to move first, then followed. For most of 2026 Radeon's pitch has been "same performance tier, more VRAM, less money." A matching increase quietly retires the last part of that.

What Nvidia Already Did

Nvidia got there first, and harder. Reporting through July indicates board-partner kit costs up roughly 20–30%, the third such adjustment of 2026 after moves in January and May.

The number that best captures where this has gone: at some US retailers an RTX 5080 now costs more than the RTX 5090's original MSRP. The product stack still exists on paper. The prices no longer respect it.

Why: It's the Memory, Again

Same root cause as the RAM crisis, one step downstream.

GDDR6 spot pricing has gone from roughly $2.50 per gigabyte to around $7.50 per gigabyte since late 2025 — about a threefold increase. GDDR7 is under the same pressure. AI datacenter demand is consuming the memory-fab output that used to end up in consumer parts, and graphics cards carry a lot of memory by design.

Do the arithmetic on a 16GB card and the problem is obvious. The memory alone went from a modest line item to one of the most expensive components on the board. A vendor can absorb that for a quarter or two. It can't absorb it indefinitely.

The Nuance Most Coverage Skips

A kit price increase is not a retail price increase. This gets flattened constantly, and it matters if you're deciding whether to buy today.

The GPU-plus-memory kit is one input into a finished card. Cooler, PCB, power delivery, assembly, shipping, distributor margin and retailer margin are all on top. A 10% increase on one input does not produce a 10% increase at checkout — the real pass-through is usually smaller, and it varies by model depending on how much of the card's cost is memory.

There's also a lag. Cards already sitting in warehouses were built with parts bought at the old price. Those keep selling at current pricing until they run out. The increase reaches you when the next shipment does, which is typically weeks, not days.

Practically: don't panic-buy on Tuesday because of a headline published on Monday. Do assume the trend is upward over the next few months.

No Cavalry Is Coming

The normal escape route from a bad GPU market is waiting for the next generation. That route is, for now, closed.

  • The RTX 50 Super refresh has been delayed indefinitely. The stated reason is the cost and availability of 3GB GDDR7 modules. Reporting has been contradictory — some sources describe it as effectively shelved, others as pushed to a later window — so treat any specific date you see as unconfirmed. What is not in dispute is that it did not arrive when expected.
  • RTX 60-series timing is reportedly at risk too, with mass production originally targeted for late 2027 and further slippage considered plausible.
  • New desktop GPUs in 2026 have been close to nonexistent. AMD's Radeon RX 9050 may end up being the only new consumer desktop card of the year, and it launched in Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America — not North America. Intel hasn't shipped a new Arc desktop card since the B570 in January.

"Wait for the next generation" only works when there is a next generation on the calendar. Right now there isn't a firm one.

So Should You Buy Now?

It depends on which of these you are.

You need a GPU now — your card died, or you can't run what you want to play. Buy. Waiting is a bet against a trend that is pointing up, with no announced product to wait for. You're upgrading for more frames, but your current card works. Slow down. Read when to upgrade your GPU and be honest about whether you're solving a real problem. In this market, an upgrade that buys you 20% more frames at a 40% price premium is a bad trade you can simply decline.

Getting More Frames Without Paying 2026 Prices

The best response to an inflated GPU market is often to not participate in it this quarter. Real options, roughly in order of effort-to-payoff:

  • Fix the settings that cost the most and show the least. Most graphics menus have three or four settings eating most of your frame budget. The graphics settings that matter most has the list.
  • Undervolt your GPU. Cooler, quieter, often slightly faster under sustained load, costs nothing but twenty minutes.
  • Check you're not CPU-limited. Buying a faster GPU fixes nothing if your processor is the ceiling — the bottleneck calculator will tell you which part is holding you back.

  • Don't overbuy VRAM you won't use, and don't underbuy it either. How much VRAM do you need is more relevant than usual when memory is what's driving the prices.

Bottom Line

AMD's July 31 notice puts both GPU vendors on the same trajectory: at least 10% for Radeon in August, on top of Nvidia's roughly 20–30% partner-kit increases earlier in the year. The cause is GDDR memory pricing, up about 3x since late 2025 on AI datacenter demand, and nobody credible is forecasting relief soon.

Two things keep this from being a reason to panic. Kit prices aren't shelf prices, and the pass-through is partial and delayed. And the biggest wins available to most gamers right now — upscaling, settings discipline, fixing a bottleneck — cost nothing.
