How to Reduce Input Lag in Games (The Complete 2026 Guide)
Input lag is the total delay between moving your mouse and seeing the result on screen. It's the difference between a game feeling crisp and feeling like you're playing underwater — and unlike raw FPS, most people never tune it. The good news: almost all of it comes from a few fixable sources. Here they are, in order of impact.
1. Turn on Reflex or Anti-Lag
The biggest single lever. NVIDIA Reflex (in the game's graphics menu) and AMD Anti-Lag 2 synchronize your CPU and GPU so frames don't pile up in a render queue waiting to be displayed. When you're GPU-bound, this cuts latency by 20–50% — the largest reduction available from one toggle.
Do this: Reflex On + Boost (NVIDIA) or Anti-Lag 2 (AMD) in every game that offers it.
2. Cap your frame rate below your refresh rate
Counter-intuitive but critical. Running at an uncapped frame rate above what your monitor can show pushes the GPU to 100% load, which adds a queue of latency. Capping FPS a few frames below your refresh rate (e.g. 141 on a 144Hz monitor) keeps the GPU from saturating and can cut latency dramatically.
Do this: Cap FPS 3–4 below refresh — in-game limiter first, or NVIDIA's Max Frame Rate / Radeon Chill max.
3. Set up VRR the low-latency way
If you have a G-Sync or FreeSync monitor, the proven lowest-latency, no-tearing setup is:
- VRR (G-Sync/FreeSync) On
- Driver VSync On, in-game VSync Off
- Reflex/Anti-Lag On
- Frame rate capped below refresh
Together these give you tear-free frames at minimum latency. Standard VSync without VRR is the opposite — it can add 30–60ms; only use it as a last resort against tearing.
4. Get a higher refresh-rate monitor
Refresh rate sets a hard floor on how fresh the image can be. A 60Hz panel shows a new frame every 16.7ms; 144Hz every 6.9ms; 240Hz every 4.2ms. Moving from 60Hz to 144Hz is the most felt upgrade in PC gaming, latency included — no software setting can beat physically drawing frames sooner.
5. Fullscreen vs borderless
Historically, exclusive fullscreen had lower latency than borderless windowed. On modern Windows 11 with a VRR display the gap has largely closed thanks to optimizations, but in latency-critical competitive games, exclusive fullscreen (where still offered) is the safe pick.
6. Kill peripheral and network lag
- Mouse polling rate: 1000Hz minimum; 4000/8000Hz on supported mice shaves another millisecond. Use a wired or high-quality wireless (modern 2.4GHz wireless is effectively lag-free; Bluetooth is not).

7. The monitor's own lag
Your monitor adds processing delay. Turn on its Game Mode in the OSD (it disables lag-adding image processing), skip motion-smoothing/"dynamic contrast" features, and avoid running non-native resolutions that trigger scaling.

- Reflex / Anti-Lag 2 On
- Cap FPS 3–4 below refresh
- VRR On + driver VSync On + in-game VSync Off
- Highest refresh rate you can afford
- Exclusive fullscreen in competitive titles
- 1000Hz+ wired mouse, Ethernet over Wi-Fi
- Monitor Game Mode On, native resolution
Nail these and your inputs will feel instant — often a bigger competitive upgrade than a few extra average FPS. If you're GPU-bound to begin with, lowering a couple of heavy graphics settings also lowers latency by freeing the GPU.
