How to Check Your PC Specs — and What They Actually Mean

You can't answer "can my PC run this game?" until you know what's actually inside it. The good news: Windows will tell you everything in about 30 seconds, no downloads required. Here are the four built-in ways to check, what to look for in each part, and — the bit most guides skip — what those numbers actually mean for gaming.

The 30-second methods

Task Manager is the fastest. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, click the Performance tab, and you get a live view of everything: CPU model and usage, GPU name and video memory, RAM amount and speed, plus each drive. If you only remember one method, make it this one.

Settings > System > About gives you the basics in plain text — CPU model, installed RAM, and your Windows version. It doesn't show your GPU, which is a strange omission, but it's handy for a quick CPU or RAM check.

dxdiag is the classic. Press Win + R, type dxdiag, and hit Enter. The System tab covers CPU and RAM; the Display tab shows your GPU, its memory, and your DirectX version. This is the tool people have been using since the Windows XP days, and it's still the one support forums ask for.

msinfo32 (Win + R, then msinfo32) is the deep-detail option — motherboard model, BIOS version, exact memory configuration. Overkill for most questions, but it's there when you need it.

Finding each part specifically

Your GPU. Task Manager > Performance > GPU, or dxdiag's Display tab. Write down the full name — "RTX 4060" tells you a lot, but on laptops the full picture matters: a laptop RTX 4060 is a different, slower chip than the desktop card with the same name, and its performance depends heavily on how much power the laptop feeds it. If you're on a laptop, note that it's the laptop variant.

Your CPU. Any of the four methods shows it. Read the model number, not just the brand: "Intel Core i5-12400F" or "AMD Ryzen 5 7600". The first digits after the family name are the generation (12th-gen Intel, Ryzen 7000-series), and generation matters more than whether it says i5 or i7.

Your RAM. Task Manager > Performance > Memory shows the total, the speed (e.g. 3200 MT/s), and — in the bottom-right details — "Slots used." Two sticks in two slots usually means dual-channel, which is meaningfully faster for gaming than a single stick of the same total size.

SSD or HDD? Task Manager's Performance tab lists each disk with its type. Or search Windows for "Defragment and Optimize Drives" — it labels every drive "Solid state drive" or "Hard disk drive" outright. If your games live on a hard disk, that's your loading-time culprit.

What the numbers mean for gaming

Specs without context are just trivia, so here's a rough 2026 yardstick — rough being the operative word, because it shifts with the games you play and the resolution you target:

  • GPU: Something around an RTX 3060 / RX 6600 or better handles most modern games comfortably at 1080p. Older or weaker cards can still game well — you'll just lean harder on settings and upscaling.
  • CPU: A 6-core chip from roughly the last five years (Ryzen 5000+, Intel 12th-gen+) rarely holds a mid-range GPU back.
  • RAM: 16 GB is the practical baseline; 32 GB is comfortable headroom rather than a requirement for most titles.
  • Storage: An SSD for your OS and games is no longer optional — several big releases now list one as a hard requirement.

Treat these as orientation, not law. A weaker system than this can still deliver a great time in the games you actually play.

Common confusions

Two GPUs listed? That's normal. Most gaming PCs — and nearly all gaming laptops — have an integrated GPU built into the CPU plus a dedicated graphics card. Task Manager shows both as "GPU 0" and "GPU 1." The dedicated one (the one with its own several gigabytes of memory) is what runs your games.

"Intel UHD" or "Iris Xe" on a laptop is not your gaming GPU — it's the low-power integrated chip. If that's the only GPU listed, the machine has no dedicated graphics, which changes everything about what it can play. Our gaming laptop guide covers how to read laptop GPU listings before you buy.

"8 GB installed, 7.4 GB usable." Windows reports slightly less RAM than installed because integrated graphics and system hardware reserve a slice. A small gap is normal; if half your RAM is "hardware reserved," a stick may not be seated properly.
