Best NVIDIA Settings for Gaming (Control Panel + NVIDIA App, 2026)

Most "optimize your NVIDIA settings" advice is a list of toggles with no explanation of what they cost or why. Here's the honest version: a few driver settings genuinely help, most do nothing, and one or two can hurt if you set them wrong. In 2026 the settings live in two places — the NVIDIA App (which replaced GeForce Experience) and the older NVIDIA Control Panel — so this covers both. Want a hardware baseline first? Power management mode → Prefer Maximum Performance

Found in Control Panel under Manage 3D Settings → Power management mode. The default ("Optimal power") lets the GPU downclock aggressively, which can cause micro-stutter and lower 1% lows as the card ramps clocks up and down. Setting it to Prefer maximum performance keeps clocks high while gaming.

Recommendation: Prefer maximum performance — set it per-game for your demanding titles rather than globally if you care about idle power draw.

Low Latency Mode + NVIDIA Reflex

Reflex is the single best latency feature NVIDIA has, and it lives in games (a toggle in the graphics menu), not the driver. It syncs the CPU and GPU so frames aren't sitting in a queue, cutting input lag by 20–50% in GPU-bound scenarios. Always turn it On (or On + Boost) where offered.

For games without Reflex, the driver's Low Latency Mode is the fallback: set it to On (Ultra is fine too, but real Reflex beats it). Don't stack driver Low Latency Mode on top of in-game Reflex — let Reflex win.

Recommendation: In-game Reflex On whenever available; driver Low Latency Mode On for everything else.

Max Frame Rate + the G-Sync setup

If you have a G-Sync or G-Sync Compatible monitor, this is the highest-impact combo for smooth, tear-free, low-latency gaming:

  1. Monitor Technology → G-Sync (Control Panel → Set up G-Sync, enable for windowed and full-screen).
  2. Vertical sync → On in the Control Panel (this is the counter-intuitive part — inside the VRR window, driver VSync eliminates tearing without adding the usual lag).
  3. Max Frame Rate → 3–4 fps below your refresh rate (e.g. 141 on a 144Hz panel). This keeps you inside the VRR range where G-Sync works.
  4. In-game VSync Off.

That "G-Sync + VSync + Reflex + capped FPS" recipe is the lowest-latency, no-tearing configuration there is.

Recommendation: Cap a few frames under refresh; VSync On in the driver, Off in-game.

Texture Filtering – Quality → High Performance

Under Manage 3D Settings. Despite the scary name, dropping from Quality to High performance is nearly invisible and can add a few percent in GPU-bound games. Set Anisotropic filtering to "Application-controlled" and let the game handle it (16x costs almost nothing modern).

Image Scaling and DLSS Override (NVIDIA App)

The NVIDIA App added a big one: DLSS Override, which lets you force the newest DLSS model (and even frame generation on RTX 40/50 cards) in supported games from the driver — no waiting for a game patch. If a game shipped with an old, shimmery DLSS version, override it to the latest for a cleaner image at the same FPS.

NVIDIA Image Scaling (NIS) is a driver-level upscaler for games with no built-in DLSS/FSR — useful, but always prefer in-game DLSS when it exists (see DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS).

Shader Cache Size → 10 GB (or Unlimited)

A small but real fix for traversal stutter: a larger shader cache means the driver recompiles shaders less often. Set it to 10 GB or Unlimited if you have SSD space to spare.

What to leave alone

  • Antialiasing – FXAA / Gamma: Off. Modern games have better AA built in.
  • Threaded Optimization: Auto (the driver knows best).
  • DSR / Dynamic Super Resolution: Off unless you're deliberately downsampling for image quality on an easy-to-run game.
  • Overlay/filters: cosmetic; the overlay costs 1–2% if you leave capture running.

The 2-minute NVIDIA checklist

  1. Power management → Prefer maximum performance
  2. In-game Reflex On; driver Low Latency Mode On elsewhere
  3. G-Sync monitor → G-Sync on, driver VSync on, cap FPS 3–4 below refresh
  4. Texture Filtering Quality → High performance
  5. Use DLSS Override to force the latest DLSS in older games
  6. Shader Cache → 10 GB+
