Ask any competitive player and you'll get the same answer: plug in a cable. Ask a networking engineer and you'll get a more interesting one: on a good modern Wi-Fi setup, the average latency difference is smaller than most people assume. Both are right, and the gap between those two answers is where most bad gaming-network advice lives. Here's the honest version.

The Honest Answer

Ethernet always wins — but not for the reason most people think. On a healthy Wi-Fi 6 or newer connection sitting close to the router, the average added latency over a wired link is typically just a few milliseconds. You would struggle to feel that in a blind test.

What you will feel is consistency. A wired connection delivers packets with almost boringly uniform timing. Wi-Fi delivers them with occasional spikes — brief moments where latency jumps well above its average, or a packet simply doesn't arrive on the first try. Averages hide this. Games don't. The problem with Wi-Fi isn't the ping number you see on a menu screen; it's the variance around that number.

Why Wi-Fi Hurts Gaming Specifically

Wi-Fi is a shared radio medium. Your packets compete with every other device on your network, your neighbors' networks on overlapping channels, and ambient interference from things like microwaves and Bluetooth gear. When a wireless frame gets corrupted, it isn't lost forever — the protocol quietly retransmits it. That's great for downloads, where a few milliseconds of retry is invisible.

Games are different. They send a constant stream of tiny, time-sensitive updates, and the game simulation moves on whether your packet arrived or not. A retransmitted packet often arrives too late to matter, which the game experiences as jitter or outright packet loss. The result is the classic Wi-Fi gaming feel: your ping looks fine, but enemies teleport, your shots don't register, and you rubber-band back three steps. Stability, not raw speed, is what Ethernet actually buys you.

When Wi-Fi Is Genuinely Fine

You don't need to run a cable through three walls for every situation. Wi-Fi is acceptable when most of these are true:

  • You're on Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or 7 with a reasonably modern router. These standards handle congestion and scheduling far better than older Wi-Fi 4/5 gear.
  • You're close to the router with minimal walls in between, ideally on the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band.
  • Your airwaves aren't congested — you're not fighting a household of streamers or an apartment block of overlapping networks.
  • You play casual or single-player games, where the occasional latency spike costs you nothing but a brief stutter.

Under those conditions, modern Wi-Fi is honestly closer to wired than its reputation suggests.

When Wired Is Non-Negotiable

  • Competitive multiplayer. Ranked shooters, fighting games, MOBAs — anywhere a single mistimed packet can decide a fight, the spikes matter more than the average.
  • Game streaming, in either direction. Broadcasting to viewers or playing via cloud/in-home streaming both punish jitter brutally, because there's no buffer big enough to hide it without adding lag.
  • Anything where you've already noticed rubber-banding. If you feel it, the data agrees with you.

The In-Between Options, Ranked

Can't run a cable directly? Here's the pecking order, best to worst:

  1. Move the router or the PC. Free, and often the single biggest improvement. Every wall and meter of distance costs you signal quality.
  2. Force the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band. Less range, but far less interference and more channel space than 2.4 GHz. Never game on 2.4 GHz if you can avoid it.
  3. MoCA adapters — if your home has coax TV wiring, these turn it into a near-Ethernet-quality link. The best-kept secret in home networking, though the adapters aren't cheap.
  4. Mesh nodes with Ethernet backhaul. A mesh node wired back to the router gives you a strong, clean access point in the room where you game. Wireless backhaul mesh is much less reliable — you're stacking two radio hops.
  5. Powerline adapters. Honest caveat: results vary wildly with your home's electrical wiring. Some homes get a rock-solid link; others get worse jitter than Wi-Fi. Buy from somewhere with easy returns and test before trusting it.

Test Your Reality, Don't Guess

Your home is not a spec sheet.   • Plug into the router directly, not a cheap unpowered hub.
  • Cable myth-buster: Cat5e is completely fine for gaming. It handles gigabit speeds, and game traffic uses a tiny fraction of that. Cat6/6a buys you future-proofing for multi-gig networks, not lower ping. Don't pay a premium for "gaming" cables.
  • On Wi-Fi: 5 GHz/6 GHz band, closest node, QoS enabled if your router offers it.
  • Kill background bandwidth hogs — cloud backups and game updates on other devices cause spikes on any connection.
