How to Check What CPU (Processor) You Have

Your CPU rarely decides your top-line FPS, but it decides your lows — the stutters and dips that make a game feel rough. Knowing exactly which processor you have tells you whether it's holding your graphics card back and whether it's time to upgrade. Here's how to find it in seconds. (For the whole build at once, see how to check your PC specs.)

The fastest way: Settings → About

Settings → System → About puts your processor model in plain text at the top, right next to installed RAM. No clicking around — this is the quickest CPU check on Windows.

Task Manager

Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Performance → CPU. You get the full model name in the top-right, plus live extras: number of cores and logical processors (threads), base speed, and current clock. Handy for confirming your chip is actually boosting under load.

dxdiag / System Information

dxdiag (Win + R) shows the CPU on its System tab; msinfo32 adds the exact stepping and motherboard details if you need them.

Reading the model number

The name carries more information than most people realize. Take Intel Core i5-13600K:

  • i5 — the tier (i3 / i5 / i7 / i9, roughly entry → enthusiast).
  • 13 — the generation. This matters more than the tier: a newer i5 often beats an older i7.
  • 600 — the SKU (higher = faster within the tier).
  • K — unlocked for overclocking; F = no integrated graphics; H/HX/U on laptops signal power class (U = low-power, HX = desktop-class).

AMD reads the same way — Ryzen 5 7600X: Ryzen 5 tier, 7000-series generation, X = higher clocks. And the X3D chips (like the 7800X3D) stack extra cache that makes them the best gaming CPUs going — worth knowing if you see it.

Cores vs clock speed — what actually matters

For gaming, 6 to 8 fast cores is the sweet spot; more cores past that help productivity, not frames. A high single-core clock usually beats a higher core count for games — we break this down in CPU cores vs clock speed and Intel vs AMD for gaming.

What to do once you know

  1. See where it ranks — the CPU Benchmark Ranking shows your chip's gaming position against every other processor.
  2. Check for a bottleneck — pair it with your GPU in the Bottleneck Calculator to see if the CPU is limiting your card.
  3. Rate the whole buildRate My PC grades your CPU, GPU and RAM together and flags the weakest link.

A modern 6-core from the last five years (Ryzen 5000+ / Intel 12th-gen+) rarely holds back a mid-range GPU — so if that's you, your money is better spent elsewhere.
