How to Check What Graphics Card (GPU) You Have
Your graphics card decides more about gaming performance than any other part, so it's the one spec worth knowing exactly. Whether you're updating drivers, checking if a game will run, or planning an upgrade, here's how to find your GPU's precise model in under a minute — no downloads needed. The fastest way: Task Manager
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open the Performance tab, and click GPU (there may be GPU 0 and GPU 1 — more on that below). The top-right corner shows the full model name, and "Dedicated GPU memory" tells you its VRAM. Done in ten seconds.
dxdiag (the one support forums ask for)
Press Win + R, type dxdiag, hit Enter, and open the Display tab. It lists the GPU name, its memory, the manufacturer, and your driver version and date — useful when a game tells you to "update your graphics driver."
Device Manager
Win + R → devmgmt.msc → Display adapters. This lists every graphics chip in the system by name. It's the quickest way to see both your integrated and dedicated GPUs at once.
GPU-Z (for the deep details)
If you want the full picture — exact GPU die, VRAM type, clock speeds, PCIe link — the free third-party tool GPU-Z is the enthusiast standard. Overkill for "what do I have," essential for "is my card throttling."
Reading the result
Write down the full name. A few things people miss:
- Laptop vs desktop. A "GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU" is a different, slower chip than the desktop RTX 4060 — and its speed depends heavily on the laptop's power limit (TGP). If your GPU name ends in "Laptop" or "Max-Q," treat it as its own tier.
- VRAM matters. "RTX 3060 12GB" vs a 3050 8GB isn't just marketing — video memory caps how high you can push textures and resolution.
- "Intel UHD," "Iris Xe," or "Radeon Graphics" with no separate card means integrated graphics — the low-power GPU inside your CPU, not a gaming card.
Two GPUs listed? That's normal
Most laptops and many desktops show two: the integrated GPU (built into the CPU) and the dedicated card. In Task Manager they appear as GPU 0 and GPU 1. The dedicated one — the one with several GB of its own memory — is what runs your games. What to do once you know
- Update the driver — grab the latest from NVIDIA (the NVIDIA App) or AMD (Adrenalin), then dial in the best NVIDIA or best AMD Radeon settings.
