What PC Do You Need to Stream Games in 2026?
Ask an old-school streamer what you need to broadcast games and they'll describe a second PC, a capture card, and a weekend of cable management. That advice is mostly outdated. The hardware has changed, and for the majority of people starting out in 2026, one reasonably specced PC handles both the game and the stream without breaking a sweat. Here's why, and what each part of your system actually contributes.
The Big Change: Hardware Encoders
Streaming means compressing your gameplay into a video feed in real time. That compression — encoding — used to run on your CPU, and it was brutal. Software encoding could eat half your processor while you were trying to play, which is exactly why dual-PC setups became the standard advice.
Then GPU makers built dedicated encoding hardware into their cards. NVIDIA calls it NVENC, AMD calls it AMF, and Intel has Quick Sync plus the media engines in its Arc GPUs. These are separate silicon blocks that handle encoding almost entirely on their own, so your frame rate barely notices the stream is running. NVENC has the strongest reputation for quality at streaming bitrates, though AMD and Intel have closed much of the gap in recent generations — for most viewers on most streams, the difference is hard to spot.
What Each Part Contributes
GPU. Your graphics card does double duty: rendering the game and running the encoder. The encoder itself costs very little performance, but you still want enough GPU headroom that your game isn't already maxed out. Upload bandwidth. This is the real bottleneck for more streamers than any component. Twitch streams typically land somewhere around 4,500–8,000 kbps depending on your settings and whether enhanced broadcasting is in play; YouTube is more forgiving and happily accepts higher bitrates, often in the 10,000–20,000 kbps range for 1080p60. As a rough rule, you want upload speed comfortably above your bitrate — ideally with 50–100% headroom for everything else on your network. Run a speed test before you buy anything. Streaming Tiers: What Gets You What
Entry. A budget gaming PC with any recent GPU encoder can stream esports titles — Valorant, League, Counter-Strike, Rocket League — at 1080p30 while playing smoothly. These games are light enough that even modest hardware has spare capacity.
Sweet spot. Something in RTX 4060 territory or better, paired with a modern 6–8 core CPU and 32GB of RAM, comfortably streams most games at 1080p60. This is the tier where single-PC streaming stops feeling like a compromise at all.
Enthusiast. A high-end GPU and 8+ strong cores let you play at 1440p with high settings while outputting a clean 1080p60 stream, with headroom left for recording a local high-quality copy at the same time. Diminishing returns for viewers, but real quality-of-life for you.
The OBS Settings That Actually Matter
Three settings do most of the work in OBS-class apps. First, encoder: pick your hardware encoder (NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync), not x264, unless you have a specific reason. Second, bitrate: match it to your platform's guidance and your tested upload speed — more isn't better if your connection can't sustain it. Third, keyframe interval: set it to 2 seconds, which is what most platforms expect. Beyond those, presets like quality level matter far less than people argue about online.
What About Dual-PC Setups?
They still exist, but they're mostly a legacy and professional tool now — useful for full-time streamers who want total isolation between the game and the broadcast, complex multi-camera productions, or console streaming through a capture card.
