Gaming PC Maintenance — The 20-Minute Routine That Keeps Your FPS

Your PC was faster the day you built it, and dust is usually the reason why. Not in a vague "computers slow down over time" way — in a measurable, thermal way. The good news: keeping performance at day-one levels takes about 20 minutes a month and a short list of honest, boring habits.

Why Maintenance Is an FPS Issue, Not a Cleaning Issue

Modern CPUs and GPUs don't run at a fixed speed. They boost as high as their temperature allows. Dust settles on heatsink fins and clogs intake filters, airflow drops, temperatures climb, and the chip quietly pulls its boost clocks back to stay safe. That's thermal throttling, and it doesn't announce itself — you just get fewer FPS, more fan noise, and occasional stutter from a machine that used to be smooth. Your cooler's design matters here too (see air vs AIO), but even the best cooler loses under a blanket of dust.

Maintenance isn't about a tidy case. It's about restoring the thermal headroom your hardware needs to boost.

The Monthly 20-Minute Routine

1. Power off and unplug. Shut down, flip the PSU switch, pull the wall cable, then press the power button once to drain residual charge. Never work inside a plugged-in PC.

2. Compressed air on filters, intakes, and heatsinks. Take the case somewhere you don't mind dust flying, remove the dust filters, and blow them clean. Short bursts through CPU and GPU heatsink fins, radiator fins if you have one, and the PSU intake. Hold fan blades still with a finger while you blow — letting compressed air spin a fan can over-rev the bearing and even generate voltage back into the board. And never use a vacuum cleaner on components: static risk plus spinning fans is not worth it.

3. Cable and port check. Give the GPU power connectors, front-panel USB, and display cable a quick look and a gentle push. Half-seated connectors cause weird problems later.

4. Driver update. Grab the latest GPU driver. Skim the release notes — if a driver is known-bad for your game, waiting a week is fine.

5. Windows storage cleanup. Run Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup for temp files and old update leftovers. One nuance: shader caches. Clearing them frees space but forces games to rebuild shaders, which means stutter on the next few launches. Leave shader caches alone unless you're troubleshooting corruption or genuinely out of space.

Every 6 to 12 Months

  • Deep dust the GPU and CPU heatsinks. Monthly bursts handle the surface; twice a year, get thorough. Angle the air through the GPU's fin stack from multiple directions until nothing more comes out. Same fan-holding rule applies.
  • Fan curve sanity check. Open your BIOS or fan software and confirm curves still make sense — updates and CMOS resets sometimes revert them to defaults that idle too slow or scream too early.
  • SSD health check. Your drive maker's own tool (Samsung Magician, WD Dashboard, Crucial Storage Executive) reads SMART data and remaining endurance in one click. Takes two minutes; catches a dying drive before it dies.
  • Reseat check after moves. If the PC has been shipped, driven, or carried up stairs, confirm the GPU is fully seated, its support bracket is doing its job, and RAM clicks are locked.

Every Few Years

Thermal paste — the honest version. Paste replacement is over-recommended. Modern paste lasts years, and if your temperatures are normal after a proper clean, repasting gains you nothing but risk. Repaste when temps are high despite clean heatsinks and correct fan behavior — that's the actual symptom of dried-out paste. If temps are fine, skip it.

Case fans. Bearings wear out. A fan that clicks, grinds, or hums at speeds it used to handle silently is due for replacement — fans are cheap, and one lazy intake fan raises temps for everything downstream.

Software Hygiene

Check Task Manager's Startup tab and disable anything you don't recognize needing at boot — launchers, updaters, RGB suites you don't use. Do an occasional clean GPU driver install if you've stacked many updates.

And the honest "don't" list: skip registry cleaners, driver-updater utilities, and "RAM boosters." Registry cleaners fix nothing measurable and occasionally break things. Driver-updater tools install wrong or bloated drivers — get GPU drivers from the source and let Windows handle the rest. RAM boosters actively hurt performance by flushing memory Windows was using intelligently. None of these gain FPS. Cleaning dust does.

Laptops, Briefly

Signs Something Needs Attention Now

  • Monthly (20 min): unplug, blow out filters and heatsinks (hold the fans), check cables, update GPU driver, light storage cleanup.
  • Every 6–12 months: deep dust, fan curve check, SSD health tool, reseat check after any move.
  • Every few years: repaste only if temps justify it, replace noisy fans.
  • Never: vacuums on components, registry cleaners, driver-updater utilities, RAM boosters.
