A hand-drawn, isometric roguelike that runs at very high frame rates on almost any PC.
Hades is Supergiant Games' god-like roguelike in which Zagreus, son of Hades, fights his way out of the Underworld one run at a time. Every escape attempt reshuffles rooms, boons, and encounters while a fully-voiced story keeps advancing between deaths. Because it renders hand-drawn 2D art rather than heavy 3D scenes, Hades is exceptionally light — modern GPUs, laptops, and handhelds push very high frame rates with almost no tuning. Its graphics menu is deliberately minimal (resolution, display mode, VSync, a quality preset, and a frame-rate cap), so the biggest 'optimization' here is simply matching the frame cap to your monitor.
Built for competitive players who want the highest frame rate and lowest input latency.
The smoothest, lowest-latency setup. Hades is so light that this mostly means uncapping the frame rate and letting a weak GPU breathe — the 2D art barely changes.
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Display Mode | Fullscreen | Exclusive fullscreen gives the lowest latency and steadiest frame times. |
| Resolution | Native (1920x1080) | — |
| VSync | Off | Uncaps the frame rate and shaves input latency; enable only if you see tearing. |
| Quality Preset | Low | On hand-drawn 2D art the visual drop is barely noticeable, but it helps weak integrated GPUs. |
| Frame Rate Cap | Match Monitor (e.g. 144) | Cap to your refresh rate for smooth, consistent frame pacing. |
| Brightness | Default | — |
| Screen Shake | Off | Personal preference; no measurable FPS impact. |
| Instant Death Darkness | Off | — |
Maximum visual fidelity for players who prefer the best-looking image.
Crispest presentation for big displays and capture. Even at 4K with VSync on, Hades stays comfortably fast on modern GPUs.
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Display Mode | Fullscreen | Borderless is fine too if you Alt-Tab a lot; Fullscreen is marginally smoother. |
| Resolution | Native / 4K (3840x2160) | Hades stays fast even at 4K on modern GPUs. |
| VSync | On | Eliminates tearing; the tiny latency cost is irrelevant for a single-player roguelike. |
| Quality Preset | High | — |
| Frame Rate Cap | Uncapped (or 60) | Let it run free, or lock to 60 for the lowest power draw on laptops. |
| Brightness | Default | — |
| Screen Shake | On | — |
| Instant Death Darkness | On | — |
The sweet spot between frame rate and visuals. Drag the slider to shift the balance.
Full visuals with frames to spare. Hades is light enough that the highest quality preset still sits near your frame cap on almost any modern GPU.
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Display Mode | Fullscreen | — |
| Resolution | Native (1920x1080) | — |
| VSync | Off | Leave off for lower latency; turn on only if tearing bothers you. |
| Quality Preset | High | Hades is so light you can run max quality and still hold near the frame cap. |

How is this calculated?Safe, technically-sound tips to get the most out of Hades.
Set the frame-rate cap to match your monitor's refresh rate — it gives the smoothest, lowest-latency frame pacing without wasting GPU power.
Because the art is hand-drawn 2D, dropping the quality preset barely changes how Hades looks but frees up integrated graphics on thin-and-light laptops.
Use exclusive Fullscreen for the steadiest frame times; switch to Borderless only if you Alt-Tab between the game and other apps often.
Keep VSync on if you notice screen tearing — Hades is light enough that the small added latency is unnoticeable in normal play.
Hades needs so little that GPU driver version rarely changes its performance — don't chase third-party 'boosters' that promise big gains here.
