About Resident Evil 4

The Resident Evil 4 remake is built on Capcom's RE Engine, which scales cleanly across current consoles. On PS5 and Xbox Series X you choose between Prioritize Framerate, which holds a smooth 60fps and is ideal for the parry-heavy melee and tight aiming, and Prioritize Resolution, which favors a sharper image and can enable optional ray-traced reflections at a lower, less stable frame rate. Framerate is the safer pick for combat, while Resolution rewards players who want the fog-soaked village and castle to look their sharpest. Xbox Series S runs at a reduced resolution to protect its frame target. A last-gen PlayStation 4 version also exists and offers 30 and 60fps options depending on scene load. HDR is well implemented and worth calibrating carefully — this is a game of oppressive darkness punctuated by flashlight beams and fire, so getting the black level right preserves both atmosphere and the ability to spot enemies. A VRR display smooths the Resolution mode's variability if you want extra fidelity without a hard 60fps lock.

Best display & mode settings

  1. 1Choose Prioritize Framerate for a locked-feeling 60fps — the remake's knife parries and precise aiming reward the extra responsiveness.
  2. 2Switch to Prioritize Resolution when you value a crisper image, and enable ray-traced reflections there only if you accept a softer, less stable frame rate.
  3. 3Turn on VRR if your display supports it to absorb the Resolution mode's fluctuations without dropping back to Framerate mode.
  4. 4Calibrate HDR and black level carefully — this is a very dark game, so a correct setup keeps atmosphere intact while letting you see approaching enemies.
  5. 5On Series S expect a reduced resolution to hold the frame target, and on last-gen PS4 use the 60fps option where the scene allows for the smoothest combat.
