About God of War
God of War is a 2018 PlayStation exclusive that originally shipped on PS4 at a 30fps target, and a free PS5 patch later reshaped how it plays on current hardware. On PS5 it runs through backward compatibility with two options: Favor Performance targets 60fps at a dynamic, roughly 4K checkerboard resolution, while Favor Resolution holds native 4K at a 30fps target. Favor Performance is the one to pick for Kratos's weighty, deliberate combat — the doubled frame rate sharpens axe throws and parries noticeably — and because the game predates ray tracing on console there is no RT mode to weigh against it. On the base PS4 the game is locked to 30fps, while PS4 Pro adds a higher-resolution option but still without a true 60fps mode; that only arrived with the PS5 patch. There is no 120Hz support, but HDR is supported and suits the cold Norse palette of icy vistas and firelit interiors. Both PS5 modes are comfortable, so the real choice is whether you prize the smoother 60fps or the sharper native-4K image.
Best display & mode settings
- 1On PS5, select Favor Performance — its ~60fps target makes Kratos's heavy combat and axe recalls far more responsive than the native-4K 30fps of Favor Resolution.
- 2Choose Favor Resolution only if you want the crispest possible image and are comfortable with a locked 30fps for this slower, cinematic pace.
- 3On base PS4 the game is capped at 30fps, and PS4 Pro adds a higher-resolution option but no true 60fps mode — the 60fps target exists only on PS5.
- 4There is no in-game 120Hz or ray tracing mode, so leave your display at a standard refresh rate and calibrate HDR instead for the icy exteriors and firelit interiors.
- 5On a VRR-capable TV, the PS5 system-level setting that applies VRR to unsupported games can help smooth Favor Performance's occasional dips below 60fps.
